A new coronavirus dangerous to humans was discovered in Russian bats

Washington State University scientists have found that a virus found in bats from Russia can be transmitted to humans and is resistant to coronavirus vaccines. The journal PLoS Pathogens reports on this.

At the end of last year, “Khosta-1” and “Khosta-2” viruses were discovered in bats from Western Russia. At first, scientists believed that they did not pose a threat to humans, but the new virus belongs to the subcategory of sarbecoviruses, which includes the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that caused the pandemic.

Khosta-2 spike proteins can infect human cells, and the virus is resistant to both SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies and antibodies from people vaccinated against COVID-19. However, the detected virus lacks certain genes involved in the pathogenesis of sarbecoviruses in humans. However, there is still the risk of Hosta-2 recombining with another virus, which could lead to an even more dangerous strain that could be transmitted between people.
