Furthermore, Russia points out that Turkish drones risk destabilizing the situation in eastern Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the use of a Bayraktar TB2 by government forces in kyiv to attack a position held by pro-Russian separatists.

“In fact, we have good and special relations with Turkey, but in this case, unfortunately, our fears are confirmed that equipping the Ukrainian army with similar types of weapons could potentially lead to the destabilization of the situation on the line of contact,” the Kremlin said. the spokesman said, commenting on the use of Turkish drones by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Russian-backed separatists have been fighting government troops in Ukraine’s Donbas region since 2014, shortly after Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula. Kyiv says at least 14,000 people have been killed so far during the conflict.

Ukraine bought sophisticated Turkish drones to bolster its army and struck a deal with Ankara to build a drone production and maintenance facility near Kyiv.

The drone issue is one of many tense relations between Turkey and Russia, despite the fact that the two countries have close ties in other areas.

“We see that once such weapons fall into the hands of the military, they can potentially be used in this (eastern) region of Ukraine and this only leads to destabilization,” Peskov was quoted as saying by APE-MPE, adding that “this does not mean contribute to the resolution of the internal problem of Ukraine”.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced on Tuesday that it had used the Turkish Bayraktar drone to force pro-Russian separatists to cease fire. He also said that the drone destroyed an artillery unit belonging to pro-Russian separatists using a guided bomb and that the drone did not cross the line of contact between the two warring sides.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, referring to this event today, said that Russia is in contact with representatives of Donbas (in eastern Ukraine) and is verifying the information that Kyiv used the Bayraktar drone.

Ukraine receives military support from the United States and other NATO countries. NATO member Turkey criticized Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

However, Turkey, which faces Ukraine and Russia along the Black Sea, has forged close ties with Moscow in the defense and energy sectors.
